The Child Abuse and Neglect Team (CAN Team) also referred to as the Riverside County Child Assessment Team provides multidisciplinary forensic exams for children, from infants to 17 years of age, who have suffered abuse or neglect.  Through a multidisciplinary team approach, Riverside County Regional Medical Center, Deparment of Public and Social Services, Law Enforcement, District Attorney, Mental Health, and Advocacy, provides forensic medical exams, emergency medical care, crisis intervention, social services, advocacy and accompaniment through medical and legal procedures for victims of abuse and their families.  This multidisciplinary approach minimizes the trauma that often accompanies the victimization process.  The staff also provides expert testimony, as well as consultation and training to community agencies and schools.

All professional medical staff have completed training standards consistent with the California Medical Protocol for Abuse Examinations from the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.  The staff includes physicians, social workers, health services assistants and administrative support staff.
