The RCRMC Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) Unit recently received the National Children’s Alliance (NCA) accreditation. This accreditation gives RCRMC recognition as a Certified Child Assessment Center (CAC).
The Riverside County Child Assessment Team (RCCAT) and RCRMC CAN is a multidisciplinary team with representation from RCRMC, Law Enforcement, District Attorney, Child Protection Services (CPS), Advocacy, Mental Health and Public Health that serves as a supportive network focused on assisting children and families traumatized by abuse. RCRMC’s RCCAT/CAN on-site team consists of five forensic physicians, a coordinator, two health services assistants, one office assistant, one medical social worker and an on-site CPS- Social Worker Liaison (CPS/RCCAT Liaison). Three of the physicians are Board Certified in both General Pediatrics and Child Abuse Pediatrics: RCCAT/CAN Medical Director Clare Sheridan-Matney, MD, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP); Lorena Vivanco de Martinez, MD, FAAP; and Amy Young-Snodgrass, MD, FAAP. The other two forensic physicians are: Susan Horowitz, M.D., M.P.H., and Mark Massi M.D., M.S., MEng.
There are approximately 938 facilities that have received recognition from NCA, ranging from programs in the early stage development to fully accredited.
Throughout the United States 529 facilities are fully accredited. RCRMC is the only one in Riverside County.
To obtain this honor, ten standards set forth by the NCA had to be fulfilled. Some of the standards include: having a multi-disciplinary team, case review, forensic interviewing, medical evaluations and advocacy in a child-friendly atmosphere.
This accreditation illustrates the commitment of many entities, including our staff, administration and the RCRMC Foundation, to providing comprehensive quality care in a multidisciplinary setting.
